French Language Requirements to work in Quebec as a Licenced Practical Nurse:

Knowledge of the French language appropriate to the practice of the profession
Under section 35 of the Charter of the French Language, a professional order is obliged to issue a permit to a person who has an appropriate knowledge of the French language to practice as a nursing assistant.

To meet this requirement, three criteria are predetermined:

1. Completion of at least three years of full-time secondary or post-secondary education in French;

    OR

2. Have passed the Secondary IV or V exam in French as a first language;

   OR

3. Have obtained a Quebec high school diploma as of the 1985-1986 school year.

Please note that holders of an Attestation d'équivalence de niveau secondaire (AENS) do not meet the requirements of the Charter of the French Language, unless they have completed at least three years of full-time secondary or post-secondary education in French, as mentioned above.

Thus, candidates must meet the above-mentioned Charter criteria to obtain their permit from the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers auxiliaires du Québec (OIIAQ).

Candidates who do not meet these conditions must pass an examination by the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) and obtain an attestation, before applying for a permit from the Ordre.
