Program Objectives

The Medical Records Management program aims to prepare students to practise the occupation by fostering the following attitudes and behaviours:

- the ability to take on responsibility, show appropriate initiative, make informed decisions, adapt to new situations, and plan for and assess the complexity and duration of a work activity
- the ability to communicate effectively with specialists and other individuals, as well as to deal respectfully, compassionately and patiently with patients
- the ability to analyze and synthesize data
- constant concern for complying with rules of professional ethics and with legislation
- concern for rigour and excellence in their work
- concern for keeping up-to-date, given the ongoing technical, organizational and administrative developments inherent in the occupation.

Total length of training includes general training that is common to all programs for 420 hours, general training for this program for 150 hours as well as complementary general training courses for 90 hours.


Duration of training consists of theory and lab work for courses; personal time that the student invests is excluded.

Medical Records Technician

Medical record technicians archive and manage medical records in a computerized database. They produce reports and statistics, analyze medical records (pathology, anatomy, psychosocial issues, oncology, etc.), and manage and control access to patient information. This is an essential occupation for those who like the health sector and are methodical in their thinking. A career as a medical record technician is for honest and discreet people who have good writing and communication skills.
