Program Objectives

The Special Education Techniques program prepares students to become specialized educators. Specialized educators work with people of all ages who are or may be dealing with adjustment difficulties resulting from emotional, physical, intellectual, social, behavioural or mental health problems. Their goal is to provide prevention, adaptation and rehabilitation support that will help these people to play a role in society.

Specialized educators assist these people in their daily lives, whether it be at home, in public or private establishments such as schools and rehabilitation centres, or in community organizations. Specialized educators observe the attitudes and behaviours of people in difficulty, and assess their needs, abilities and lifestyle habits. They also screen, rate, detect and assess undiagnosed disorders, and assess the suicide risk and danger level during crises. In addition, they either prepare and update intervention plans, or take part in the process of preparing and updating these plans as part of multidisciplinary teams set up to address the specific needs of the individuals in difficulty.

Specialized educators are also required to apply intervention approaches and techniques, design or adapt intervention tools, plan and implement clinical activities for individuals or groups, and record their interventions in writing. To do this, they work closely with a multidisciplinary team and, where applicable, with the family of the person in difficulty. They create and maintain a climate of trust within which they are able to provide the support needed to facilitate rehabilitation or help the person to adapt. They use means that enable people in difficulty to learn, acquire new habits and develop attitudes and behaviours suited to their environment.
